"Someone gave it to me"
2009. B/W film, as is.
A man, who had been searching garbage bins along a street in a commercial center, approached another man who was trying to find something of value in a bin.
The first man took a clean bran-new cigarette from his pocket and gave it to the other man. The neat white cigarette almost shone in the darkness.
The second man, looking at it, “Where did you find it?” He asked with surprise.
“Someone gave it to me.” The man said. He left quickly, probably heading to another bin.
The proceeds from this item will be donated to Farestart.

How horrible to have to search garbage bins…but what a beautiful gesture.Nice shot and write up Zhao
maka1967 replied
Thank you so much, Gilberte! Although smoking may not be good for health, it’s nevertheless quite sad that a humble cigarette becomes something they dream of. But poverty didn’t destroy their fellow feeling towards one another.

has a hey buddy can you spare me a dime feel to it for me …........... Blurred background really adds Zhao such emotion for a humble cigarette

Thank you, my friend! It seems fate is not just for them. But they, like people in any human community, have developed their circles in street…

zhao,
another powerful narrative around life, and a eerily dark mood set up with B&W. Fantastic!

Thank you so much, for your insightful comment, Phil! And for the encouragement!
RB is a beautiful place with human warmth. But in reality, as I did street photography, I often felt this eerily dark mood circulating in the streets. Sometimes the suffering and people’s indifference I saw made me depressed. I need to do some art, besides documentary work. Recently I developed some styles to make my art work more expressive…
Thank you, Phil! All the best!

looking forward to seeing your new expressions. i must admit that mixed in with the friendliness and warmth I experienced from chinese during my visit to your country, i, too, felt a kind of neediness people expressed, whether through beggars, handicaped, or just plain folks on the street.
maka1967 replied
Thank you, Phil! Chinese need to express themselves more, not what they are told to say at school. In everyday life there is so much to tell about. Cheers!

Thank you so much, my friend! Had to capture this. They were actually in shadow. The brightly-lit world and their world. But they brought some warmth into the darkness.
Hope someday people don’t need to make a living that way. But now there are sad stories.

Great capture Zhao and a lovely work of art as well. Looks like there wasn’t much light to work with as well.
The thing I Like about this pic is it shows poverty struck people as having dignity. Its easy to show them as despairing or hopeless. For example a picture of them rummaging through a rubbish bin. But you chose to show their humanity, good on you Zhao.
