A modern river
Taken on May 7, 2008. Uploaded as it is.
A “high-grade residential area” in downtown Beijing. The water stinks the place.
The water was clear in 1970s. After cement bank and riverbed was built in 1990s to give the river a modern look, the river seemed dead. Pollution has been building up over time in the river. Now algae almost covers the whole surface of the water. The smell of the water is unbearable.

well composed image which tells a story, the same story is being told all over, is it not about time humans took responsibility for their planet.

Ouch, sad state…
In Dublin, when the tides are low, one can see bar tables, umbrellas, chairs, paper, and all sort of thing on the bottom of river bed….

Thank you for sharing this. It is very sad how we take something so precious so for granted.

Another great document of your city, it is such a shame to see such visable pollution.

I remember places in NZ where parts of rivers and streams were altered like this to ‘improve’ flow or aesthetics. Later some were restored and an incredible difference in health resulted. I’m sorry to see the state of this river, maka1967, but good on you for publicising it.
