This little guy was emerging from his house to catch his evening meal.

The jumping spider family (Salticidae) contains more than 500 described genera and about 5,000 described species, making it the largest family of spiders with about 13% of all species. Jumping spiders have good vision and use it for hunting and navigating. They are capable of jumping from place to place, secured by a silk tether. Both their book lungs and the tracheal system are well-developed, as they depend on both systems (bimodal breathing).(wiki)

Excellent capture Marleia. It is unusual to find jumping spiders in a web so there is a pretty good chance this female has an egg chamber there, plenty more subjects coming along soon if she has.

  • I will have to check. I see them often during the day in little “silk” cases up in different plants and watch them emerge in the evening. I will have to take better notice to see if they are male or female. Thank you so much for commenting :-)))))

Incredible detail and color. So, has anything ever “jumped” on you while photographing? How close are you when shooting? I don’t have a macro lens and am practically 3 inches away w/ super macro settings.

  • Hi Joe :) I am Verrrrrrry close :) Yes they do jump on me all the time. I really love spiders though and have never had any problems. I say the closer the better ;)
