Flutterby, Butterfly, Blue eyes + Beads by

Graphite, Pastels, Prismacolour Pencils + Black Ink on A5 Cartridge paper

I started this over a year ago. Very first attempt at graphite… I ended up doing the same drawing in ink instead. Well, similar, this one changed a little along the way… Maybe that’s why the butterflies flew in— Metamorphosis ♥

I’ll concede that this was an afterthought rather than direct inspiration, but seemingly, so appropriate:

“a dash of truth
spread thinly
Like a flag
On a popstar
On a Benzodiazapene”

From one of my favourite songs, Pancake by Tori Amos

It troubles me a little the way society cuts to celebrities to ribbons when they experience the same issues that so many ordinary people around the world do. The fact that they’re in the public eye doesn’t make them perfect— and i struggle with the idea that that is in some way justification for telling them so in cruel, trashy magazine articles.

I love that she has the same look in her eyes as your girls in the sea, and I absolutely love the butterflies and flowers. Very cool Sarah, so glad you finished her!

  • Thanks Tammy. I hadn’t noticed that, but you’re probably right… Sub-conscious technique it must be!!! Yes, i’m glad i finished her to… She’s been sitting on my desk staring at me for several months now!!! And, now i can move on and do some other things i’ve had on mind! ♥

WOW Sarah- I must have missed this. Absolutely stunning hon. You know you have such a recognisable style- I just adore how you do lips (this reminds me of your Tori lips) and the butterflies and hair are exquisitely rendered.
Always worth the wait for a new one :)))) LOVE IT xx

  • Thanks so much Anita! Wow, i really feel in pencil i’m still developing a style, but i feel more comfortable with each piece… Next on the list are some bigger pieces i think, for starters, they show up much better on screen than A5’s! ;)
Thankyou your support always means so much to me as you know i just love what you do. ♥

very very beautiful Sarah, she has a lovely softness about her, i really love the detail in her eyes and lips…and that shading under the lip is terrific….the butterflies add such a lovely whimsical touch :) x

  • Thanks so much Karin, as is always the case with photos/scans, she’s actually much softer on paper!!! But i’m enjoying learning to draw faces… And can never resist a Frangipani *cough*frangi-pangi*cough* ;P
