Jean Slater is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Gillian Wright. Jean first appeared in Eastenders in 2004, as the mother of Sean and Stacey. She is a sufferer of bipolar disorder, and on occasion has been known to skip her medication, so the latest story line has been particularly frustrating for the viewer as we watch Michael Moon con Jean into giving him her ‘stash’ which she keeps under her bed for safety – a tidy sum from a lottery win, along with the £10,000 VAT money from the pub (The Queen Vic, for which she book keeps) to fund his fictional scheme for coaching disfunctional youngsters at his boxing club. Jean, trusting as ever, tries to get him to fulfill his false promises of dividends, plus the return of her original investment, only to have him deny that she ever loaned him the money. He does his utmost to convince everyone around her that she is delusional, obsessive about babies, and sets up her room with ‘stolen’ items. Jean even threatens to commit suicide if her niece Kat sends her back to hospital for treatment. eventually Michael confesses to Kat that he did take the money, but not before he has driven Jean to breaking point.
