Dot Branning, nee Cotton, is a fictional soap character from the thrice weekly UK TV series, Eastenders. Played by actress June Brown, she joined the series in July 1985, as the mother of bad boy Nick Cotton, and launderette assistant, along with Pauline Fowler, played by Wendy Richard.

Dot is known for her devout Christian faith, gossiping, chain smoking, hypochondria, and motherly attitude to those in need.Originally married in the series to conman Charlie Cotton, Dot was married again in 2002 to pensioner Jim Branning (John Bardon). The union has proven popular with fans, and Brown and Bardon have won awards for their screen partnership. On 31 January 2008, Dot became the first character ever to appear in a monologue episode of a British soap. The acclaimed episode saw Dot reminiscing about her years of loss and grief into a tape recorder as a message to her ailing Husband Jim, who has just recently been transported to a care home following a stroke, which was written into the series after John Bardon sufferred a stroke in real life.

This is so brilliant! Superb, wonderful, I have run out of adjectives – I just LOVE it! And no, I do not watch Eastenders – but I know who she is – a marvellous actress – that expression is so, so,so Dot!

  • I snapped it off the TV with my camera, printed it out and copied it. The story line was, Dot was feeling incapable of caring for her bed-bound husband Jim while still trying to hold her job down at the launderette. She was looking guilty here, as she was considering putting him into a care home. Her face was so expressive, I just had to draw her. Thanks for the lovely comment!
