Dad’s Army. A popular British BBC comedy series aired from 1968-1977.

The Walmington-On-Sea platoon of the Home Guard is commanded by pompous bank manager Captain Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe). He’s assisted by his chief clerk, Sergeant Wilson (John Le Mesurier).

Lance Corporal Jones (Clive Dunn) is an old soldier, renowned for his frequent cries of “Don’t Panic!” and “They don’t like it up ’em!”.

Private Frazer (John Laurie) is a miserable old Scotsman whose favourite saying is “We’re doomed!”.

Private Godfrey (Arnold Ridley) spends much of his time asking if he can “be excused”.

Private Pike (Ian Lavender) is a bit of a “mummy’s boy”. His mother (Janet Davies) is Sergeant Wilson’s long-time girlfriend.

Private Walker (James Beck) is a “spiv” – there are few things that he can’t get his hands on, provided the price is right.

This motley band of men provide Walmington-on-Sea’s last line of defence against the Nazi hordes.

Prismacolor and Faber-Castell pencils on Bristol Board extra smooth surface, 300gsm, 16 inches x 12 inches.

I’m a self-taught artist from the North of England and I like to inject a bit of humour wherever possible, whether it’s in my writing (see my poems), or my artwork.

Great work Margaret, you’ve composed the drawing as if it was an original picture. I don’t know what you were worried about!

  • I could point out loads of mistakes Gary. For instance, the badge on Captain Mainwaring’s hat is on backwards. That’s because I mirrored the original image to face him the opposite way! Love your new avatar by the way!

This is superb, Margaret, you have them all to a tee!
one of our art club members did a pencil drawing of them, and it was great, but a touch of colour really brings out their characters !

  • Even if the colour is only brown and green! Thanks George for a great comment!
