Strong Characters of Coronation Street : Jack and Vera by

Jack Duckworth (played by Bill Tarmey)‘s enduring relationship with Vera Burton (Elizabeth Dawn) had always been up and down, they had a rocky marriage and sometimes Jack appeared to show little care for her.Tarmey described the first few decades in the following manner: "He would never knowingly hurt people and he loves Vera, although he doesn’t always like her. He will defend her to the death, unless the chap slagging her off is bigger than he is.
In their “hey-day” they were dubbed as the modern day Stan (Bernard Youens) and Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander)
Both characters were recently written out of the show by dying in fairly quick succession to one another. In real life, Elizabeth Dawn left first because of her emphysema, and Bill Tarmey also left because of health related problems. Their final scenes were very emotional.
Bill Tarmey sadly passed away in November 2012.
This portrait was done with Faber Castell and Staedtler Ergosoft pencils on 250 gsm paper card.

Hi Margaret, another awesome piece of work I see.I didn’t watch much Coronation Street, but I do recognise the characters depicted. The detail is wonderful, the shape of Jack’s head, his coat, and Vera’s hair and earrings. You’ve captured them all so well. Its a fave for me!

  • Thanks Harry for your very detailed comment. Coming from a non-fan of the show makes it even more appreciated. I can just about forgive you for that, but it’s never to late however to become a convert! Thanks again.

Ah, your eyesight must almost be back to normal Margaret as some of the detail in this, especially the highlights in Jacks hair, are outstanding and could only have been done with all eyes open. Great characters who compliment each other even if Vera’s voice and dialect would have driven any sane man mad.

  • I’d love to say it was back to normal, and the truth is it’s much improved, but the right eye still has a few floaters and more foggy patches than clear ones. The left one is still reliable for central vision, but the laser has left the periphery in a cloud, which I’m hoping will clear in time. I bet you wished you’d never asked now. Old people like me just love to discuss our ailments. Thanks Gary, for the very thoughtful comment, and you’re right about Vera’s peace-shattering vocals. Now, shall I tell you about my wonky finger….?
