Genus Junonia Pansies
Small brightly colored nymphalines; very similar to Precis but less difference between WSFs and DSFs.
Robust butterflies, with fast, agile flight,; often sit on ground with wings slowly opening and closing.
Fond of flowers. Eggs laid singly on lamiaceae, Acanthaceae and Scrophulariaceae. Bulb-shaped, green to yellow, with 10-16 prominent glassy longitudinal ribs, and (sometimes) 25-40 cross ridges.
Larva dark, sometimes with prominent orange or yellow longitudinal stripes; seven longitudinal rows of branched spines of varying length; head capsule unadorned. Pupa robust, usually with bifid head, two or more rows of dorsal tubercles on abdomen; suspended head down from cremaster
WINGSPAN: Female: 40-45mm Male: 40-50mm
DISTIBUTION: Common, widespread. From W Cape through warmer, moister karoo areas into Grassland and Savanna of Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Swaziland, Mapumalanga, Limpopo and NW provinces, and Northern cape.
HABITAT: Parks and gardens, flatlands, hillsides.
FLIGHT PERIOD: Year round in warmer areas, Peaks Oct and Nov, and Feb-May

Thank you so much John, there were just lots of them around that day, they normally gather where it is damp but that day they where all over on dried trees and logs, and there where no males around, only the females!
