BLACK-FACED IMPALA _Aepyceros melampus petersi
Swartneusrooibok

Appearance similar to the impala, colouration differs in being darker and the upper parts of the body lacking the rich red brown, being duller brown with purplish sheen. Tip of the ears darker and tails considerably longer and bushier. There is a very dark stripe from the nostrils to the top of the head, wide up to the eyes and narrow to the top of the head, which is characteristic.
Because they are far less numerous than the impala, her congregations are correspondingly smaller. Herds usually number up to 20 but more in lambing times, splitting up afterwards. The social behaviour and structure is similar. Their habitat is dense riverine, where they tend to remain during the day. Available water is vital.
Reproduction as the impala, Records reveal that, in the event of the birth of twins, one is totally ignored and allowed to die.
FOOD: Similar to the impala. Seasonally they eat large quantities of pods of the acacias. They compete with goats for available food and their existence is threatened by the increasing competition from these problem animals.
Gestation period +/- 195 days
Young One
Mass Male 62kg Female 50kg
Shoulder height 90cm
Horns 65cm (Males)
Life expectancy 12 Years
