OSTRICH – Struthio camelus
Hierdie onmiskenbare en welbekende voelsoort is die grootste ter wereld en kan nie vlieg nie.
Broeityd is van Julie tot September. In broeiseisoen brul die mannetjie snags; klink nogal na ’n veraf leeubrul.
Die paar honderd volstruise in die Kruger Nasionale Park is waarskynlik die laaste suiwer bevolking van die plaaslike ras, want elders in die land het volstruise gekruis met die wat van Noor-Afrika af ingevoer is. Hulle hou veral in oop of yl beboste veld en vermy digte bos en koppies.

Common resident. Well-known, enormous, flightless bird.
Immature is like a small, scruffy female and is usually accompanied by adults.
Male utters a lion-like roar.
Usually in pairs or groups, sometimes with many young birds present
The tail colour of adult males varies according to region, from whitish to grey or cinnamon-brown.
Wild ostriches occur in isolated pockets throughout Southern-Africa, especially in the large nature reserves.
Inhabits woodland and wooded grasslands in the East and thornveld or grasslands in the North and Western regions.
