Since ancient times, cereals and products derived from cereals have formed the staple diets of practically all people.

Cereals belongs to the grassfamily, the Poaceae or Gramineae. What is usually called the grass grain or grass seed is actually a one selected dry fruit ( czryopsis). The grain can be naked, as in wheat or maize, or it can have persistant husks or chaff, as in barley or oats. the husks are the fibrous remains of the grass flower or spikelet.
