The bat-eared fox is not, as its name implies, a true fox. The bushy, black-tipped tail, black-edged ears and blackish legs make this animal easily distinguisable.
It has the ability to twist and turn whilst running after prey or when escaping a predator, such as one of the large eagles.
Both diurnal and nocturnal, it occurs in pairs of small groups and lives in burrows which it digs itself, in old antbear holes or under bushes.
It has well-developed senses. The call is not a howl, but a series of soft shrill ‘who-who’ sounds.
It is found in Botswana, Namibia, the western fringe of Zimbabwe and in the Northern Cape, southwestern Cape, North-West Province,Nothern Province and the Free State in South Africa.

DIET: Insects, small radents, fruits, groundnesting birds, small reptiles and larvae.
The large, well-developed ears enable it to detect underground prey which it digs out.
