THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT – Loxodonta Africana
Location captured: “The Kruger National Park”, South Africa.
Elephants have a highly developed social structure and family units are led by a cow elephant or matriarch. The matriarch is, by natural selection, the most experienced member of the group and automatically assumes leadership. The composition of the herd varies and one will find bulls of various ages in attendance. A bull may be distinguished from a cow by its rounded forehead; the cow’s forehead is angular. Both have tusks. Bulls leave the family unit at puberty (10 -12 years) and, in many instances, are driven out by the older cows.

A , still pink, little new born baby elephant hanging on to a little branch, with his tiny trunk, for dear life!

Mags, I always look forward to what I am going to learn from you. I live in Washington, D.C., and I am ashamed to say that the National Zoo is an easy walk from where I live but I never go there. Terrible, isn’t it? But today I am walking up there with my camera to see the elephants! Thanks Mags for the inspiration! – Cora

  • Thank you so much dear Cora, I again find so much inspiration in your kindness and really very inspirational comments. It really is a treasure to me. You go and enjoy the elephants, they really are amazing animals and once you build up knowledge you will notice behaviour you never noticed before. Big hug and take care xxx

Yes, so adorable. Interesting that the baby elephant has the same “clutch” instinct as a newborn human infant. This little one’s trunk has latched on to the branch – as a human baby latches on with its little hand to its mum’s finger. Just so wonderful for you (and us) to see!
    Cordially, Ellen

  • Thank you so much Ellen, very happy you enjoyed it!
