LOCATION CAPTURED: GROENLAND SAFARI’S, Tolwe, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Shoulder height: 1,5 – 1,75m
Mass: Up to 900kg
Gestation: Between 255 and 265 days, single calf.
These inoffensive, gregarious, but shy, animals are excellent jumpers. They are nomadic, inhabiting savannas and open plains, dry mopane, light woodland and montane grassland. Independent of water, eland derive their moisture intake from plants.
Both sexes have horns; although those of the females are often longer.
Old bulls are often solitary. Normally silent creatures, eland have an acute sense of smell and good hearing.
DIET: Mainly browsers, but will also graze. Fond of young grass in areas that have beeb burnt.
Eat leaves, wild fruits, bulbs and the bark of certain trees, particularly worteldoring, *_Sesamothamnus lugardii.
The horns play a useful role in rendering braches eccessible. Obtains moisture fro its food sources.

    Great shot! I love how they are looking right at the camera, and with passengers… I have never seen an Eland

  • Thank you, they are lovely animals and their hosts are oxpeckers. Birds that clean them from tics, are going to post a capture with details on them, very interesting as they are on the endangered species list in Africa.
