rainbow inside (poem)

I stand atop a mountain
gazing across the valleys and the plains
waiting for that one clear thought
that will explain it all
waiting for the clarity of mind
that is so elusive in my everyday
but clouds rise up obscuring the view
the same way they did yesterday
and all the days before
holding on to the vestiges of
the little that came to me
in that one short burst
I begin the long way down
worrying the puzzle
that my mind has become
each year only adding to the enigma
(like rings on a tree grow around the centre)
of what was once so clear
uncluttered by experience
the sky was up and
the ground was down
and trees were always green
now a mist obscures even the brightest of days
the ground cannot be trusted
but maybe one day
I shed this skin
and what is left will be the rainbow
that escaped me for so long
and I will hug myself
and hold it tight
and I will never let it go.
