my stupid heart

my heart is stupid
and oh so brave
it wants what it wants
and it goes for it
head over heels
it runs and never walks
it rushes and never pauses

and the fall is
almost inevitable
the writing is there
right on every wall
I pass on my way
and I ignore it all

cryptic though it may be
the end is always known
right at the beginning
the cracks are appearing
in anticipation of
all the breaks
that came before
and those lined up
in pretty rows

but

my heart is stubborn
and oh so courageous
and love comes
on the breeze
and love leaves
with the storm
and all that remains
is to swim with the flood
to hold on to the wreckage
to keep your head
above the water
and look out for wings
to spread and float
on the breeze
and leave the storm
behind.

Came to me upon waking one morning. About the ways our heart does what it wants, never mind what our head says….
