words from the dark

in the darkest hours
just before dawn
when the light breaks
at the wall of night
when everything is still
and nothing stirs

there are only shades of black
and not a hint of grey
a big velvet wave of it
crashing right above my head

my heart is full
of unspoken fears
and unwept tears

seeping through
the barrier of denial

poisoning the chance of further sleep
and the hope of sweet nothing dreams

shackled inside my own head
yearning for the light
to rise above the horizon
to free me from

the unacknowledged
the still bleeding wounds
the secret hopes

for what seems like eternity
until the light rises once again

trembling with the knowledge
that this will lie in wait for me
next time I am careless enough

to wake in the darkest hours
just before dawn
when the light breaks
at the wall of night
when everything is still
and nothing stirs.
