the end of days (poem)

if you love nothing and no one
if there is no passion
then there is no black and white
then there are no peaks and troughs
you are aware of colour only by its absence
you notice only a single shade of grey

life passes you by
like the trees outside the car window

life leaves you
without a trace

life is indiscernible
from dying for a long time

hold on tight to feel everything
even if the pain reaches deep
laugh out loud
even if it isn’t funny
pretend there’s something, anything
until it’s true

life is for the living and
death lasts forever

until we go into that last embrace
there is no knowing what it will feel like
until we show up at the gates
there’s no knowing where we’ll go then

everything’s right here
and it’s up to us
to make something worthwhile
to paint our life
in many shades of grey
in all the colours of the rainbow
to live through the ups and downs
to love all we can
until the end of days.

Artist's Description

Just something that’s been going round my head for a while. Carpe Diem! I think sometimes it’s a hard lesson to remember when the washing piles up and there’s cooking to be done and homework to be supervised….
