the things I allow myself to think (poem)

the things I allow myself to think
are vague and soft
like furniture hidden under sheets
not ever sharp and clear
like a view through crystal glass

some things are better left obscure
they cut through skin
like a knife through butter
leaving blood stains on the floor
for all to see and follow
like a map to a country far away

some things are better left unclear
they are poison seeping through my veins
eroding my very reason
a labyrinth of confusion
where the way is never clear
and the goal is always beyond the horizon

some things are better left hidden
never distinct enough to make out
what they once were to me
memories safely stored behind locked doors
in a room with long drapes hiding the windows
filled with dust and the weavings of spiders

some things are better left out of sight
the catalogue of items
filling the empty rooms
burnt long ago in a fire
when the heart was in flames
and the soul needed soothing

the things I allow myself to think
are few and far between
like a necklace of islands in the ocean
never precise and harsh
like the cries of seagulls by the beach

the things I hold dear
the things that kill me
are hidden in echoing halls
in rooms too dark to navigate
deep in the vast spaces of my head
a galaxy and a universe away.
