death of a butterfly (poem)

puzzle pieces
odd s and ends
held together
with bits of string

a broken heart
in a paper bag
wrapped with
threads of yarn

a silken butterfly
once pristinely white
shredded, tattered
with ragged wings

a story written
on a dirty wall
scratched deep
inked in blood

the azure of the sky
and fluffy clouds
beckoning to those
still full of hope

the end is waiting
patiently backstage
for its chance
to take a bite

the only hope
is hope itself
a dream, a wish
a hand to hold.
