Heart of Wood

Yesterday I carved a heart
from dark Rowan wood.

Today I painted it deep red
with blood from a paper cut.

Tomorrow I’ll fill it with shards
from the one that got broken.

(You never know,
it might do some good.)

I’ll stuff it in the hole,
that void in my chest.

I’ll sit in the desert
looking up at the stars
wishing on a comet
for a bit of magic
just like the little boy,
the one in the story
who wanted to be real.

I’ll wait and wait
through dawn to dusk
and all through the night, too
closing my eyes
hoping and listening
for that first beat
that tells me
I can do it
all over again.

The End

Artist's Description

Experimenting with an idea I had for a story and then decided to turn into a poem… I might still write the story though. LOL … and I did, here’s the story
