shapes in the fog

bitter-bitter salt melting on red lips
dripping pearls of wisdom
or maybe just dross and chaff
the writing on the wall
is made from shadows
past and future
the present is
what worries me
are the cloudscapes in the sky
moonlight and stars
drifting down
to sleep side by side with the lion
and the meek
it’s their kingdom after all
crows roosting in treetops
changing places
fluttering wings
like dark angels
messengers of the unseen
or harbingers of doom
depending on your view
sleep descending on
heavy eyelids
dreams perchance or nightmares
depending on your view
a silver web
of must, need, and hope
cradling wishes and fears
a song of the wild wood
ringing across the desert
of my ever yearning heart.
