Written On My Skin

Each caress
Each torture
Every single loving word
Every single bitter accusation
All the happy memories
All the sad experiences

       Written on my skin

Each and every little spark
Each and every painful tear
Any of a plethora of honest deeds
Any of a multitude of spiteful sins
All the ideas and imaginations
All the musings and philosophies

       Written on my skin

Letters small and large and pictures bright and dark
Scars deep and sore and soft smooth velvet swirls
Grooves and wrinkles
Telling of history and age
Curling laughter lines
Silent reminders of sunny days

       Written on my skin

In cryptic hieroglyphs
Of a language not yet known
In ideograms
Of a people long forgotten
In ancient runes
Of a tribe yet to be born

       Written on my skin

For you to see
     If you may
For you to read
     If you can
For you to understand
     If you want

       Written on my skin

          … a book of me.

This is in part INSPIRED by Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and my musings on how we ‘read’ people. In the Oscar Wilde story people’s perception of Dorian is wrong because the signs of his life as they are written on his face etc are not visible but only shown in the hidden painting of Dorian. How do we ‘read’ people? How do you explain a sudden like or dislike of a person you know nothing about? There are many conscious decisions we make about people but probably far, far more subconscious decisions that allow us to get an ‘idea’ of a person just by looking at them, be it the shape of their mouth, the lines on their faces, the expression in their eyes or their body language, and all the many others we don’t even know about.

I am a very creative person and it’s my way of dealing with the world, inside and out. I am only happy when I am making things or painting or writing. There are just not enough hours in the day…. I am into poetry and photo manipulation at the moment and also dabbling in photography. :-)

This is wonderful thought Sybille…the ‘writing’ on our bodies can reveal so much about us, what we are told, called etc…

Syb, so much truth and wisdom flows from your incredibly lovely and powerful words that for me, right now, that too is written on my skin. All of this – each life experience – IS indelibly etched into the wrinkles and frown lines, the laugh lines and crow’s feet that mark certainly my face but now I see also impress themselves everywhere on my skin. The most significant and amazing piece of poetry – with another remarkable image – that I’ve read in some time. You are just brilliant Syb! xox

  • Thank you so much for this lovely, lovely comment. It means so much to know my art touches you. :-) xoxo
