Mind Castles

We build roads
To Might-have-been
And other miraculous,
Magic, out of this world,
Faraway places

Running down the rabbit hole
Going through the wardrobe
Finding that magic door
We enjoy ourselves
We live the life
We always yearned for
And smile in technicolour

Pink fluffy daydreams
Fly on silvery moon beams
To once-in-a-life-time
And happy-ever-after
With sing-songing birds
Helping with the chores
In this world of our own making

Born of a hope for better
We become the creators
Of our own destiny
Where we are the ones
Taking charge
Totally in control
Right here, right now.

Dream castles
Built on sand
Made from bubbles
And butterfly wings

Save me from the same old grey
Colour me with a splash of rainbow
And a sprinkling of fairy dust

Dream castles
Built on sand
Made from bubbles
And butterfly wings

Held together
By the wish for some magic
In a black and white life.

This was a really difficult poem to write and get right. It’s easy to be smug about other people’s escapism, but I believe it’s an essential survival tool for most of us, be it watching a soppy film, reading a thriller (and imagining yourself as the dashing hero) or sitting on a bench during your lunch break and day dreaming. Let’s face it, most of our lives aren’t the kind you find in films, often there isn’t a happy ending and a deus ex machina is a rare occurence.

So this is for all the daydreams that made our lives a little brighter and a little happier.

I am a very creative person and it’s my way of dealing with the world, inside and out. I am only happy when I am making things or painting or writing. There are just not enough hours in the day…. I am into poetry and photo manipulation at the moment and also dabbling in photography. :-)

And what could possibly be wrong with a daydream like this, my friend?? True, one can’t live in a world of bubbles and butterflies for very long but as you have so brilliantly concluded in words that just might haunt me unless I make them my mantra – our too ordinary, sometimes painful, days can be “held together by the wish for some magic in a black and white life.” I love this, Syb. xox

  • Thank you so much Lianne. :-) I am so pleased you enjoyed this. There’s something magic about daydreams and how they add a little fairy dust to our ordinary lives. :-) xoxo

ur writing is always such magic… i think its part of our human nature to have these ideas of escapism… our imaginations it seems are tools for survival, and a place where we find hope
    great work of art sybille

  • Thank you so much Shoaib. I agree it’s a survival mechanism to dream yourself to a ‘nice place’ when things get tough, to allow you to restore your energy and hope. xo
