The Circus

The red and white stripes
of the canopy
     - vanished -
all that’s left is the
pale imprint on the common.

The smells of cotton candy
the roars of the tiger
     - evaporated -
a closed eyes daydream kind of
memory is all that remains.

The excitement of the crowds
the screams of the children
     - dissipated -
the sounds left with the wind
down the open road.
          The circus has gone.

The prancing elephants,
the magic doves,
the clumsy clowns,
the elegant tightrope walkers,
the scent of wild animals,
the stink of the masses,
the taste of sugar coated almonds,
the flavour of sweet lemonade,
now just a pale image in the mind.
          The circus has gone.

Departed with hardly a trace
and no forwarding address;
the posters faded
to pastel colours,
ripped and plastered over
with new pleasures to come.
          The circus has gone.

The road ever
leads into the future
to pastures greener,
to distant horizons,
forever forward,
never a look back.
          The circus has gone.

Poem about the circus, or is it? :-)

I am a very creative person and it’s my way of dealing with the world, inside and out. I am only happy when I am making things or painting or writing. There are just not enough hours in the day…. I am into poetry and photo manipulation at the moment and also dabbling in photography. :-)

You’ve written this beautifully…I’ve never been to the circus and yet I feel a soft yearning for what I’ve never experienced..skillfully done. :)

  • Thank you so much. I am glad it made you remember something you’ve never experienced. LOL

And if our lives are a circus then perhaps it’s best that it should be gone. And yet, we remember and long for the color and the noise and the daring exploits of the performers in it that made us ooh and ahh with terror or delight. Wonderfully visual and thoroughly captivating, Syb. xox

  • Thank you so much. I thought it applied to lots of things not just the circus. Sometimes our memories are fond, but only until we look closely… xo

Nice read !! ( for some reason it had me thinking of Ray Bradburys’ Something Wicked This Way Comes )

  • Thank you so much Gregory. :-) Yep, I think there’s something of that in there. :-) xo
