There is a dark side to me
casting flickering shadows over my face
flowing like black syrup through my veins
dripping ink from my fingertips onto the page
creating shapes and symbols from a long forgotten age
painting images of dim futures barely grasped
releasing shades from the past into the wild.

There is a light side to me
brightening the sparkling glint in my eyes
coursing like sweet wine through my body
slipping of my skin like strands of silver gossamer
making pictures in my head of blue skies and summer
singing like a bird soaring in the air
liberating sugar motes and strands of light.

There are many sides to me.

Sometimes I am this, sometimes I am that
there are happy days full of sunshine
there are gloomy days full of shadows
there are between days full of nothing much.

Sometimes I am this, sometimes I am that
there are days when I am the poet
there are days when I am the artist
there are days when I am the page.

Sometimes I am this, sometimes I am that
don’t judge me by just a single day
don’t think you know me after just one hour
don’t put me in a cage to keep me still.

Poem about boxes… the kind people shove you into, even if you don’t fit…

Here’s the image to go with it:

I am a very creative person and it’s my way of dealing with the world, inside and out. I am only happy when I am making things or painting or writing. There are just not enough hours in the day…. I am into poetry and photo manipulation at the moment and also dabbling in photography. :-)

    When one embraces their darkness,
    a funny thing happens.
    It becomes their friend.

  • Definitely. And believe me, darkness doesn’t like that. LOL ;-)

None of us is a single dimensional being and even those who know us best can only know a few facets of our being and still that is the external expression of something ineffable that no one can know but ourselves – and God as we perceive him/her to be. And most of us are still pretty rough diamonds at that. As always, Syb, your writing is truly gorgeous, your style so readable and your thoughts so beautifully reasoned. Love everything about this.

  • Thank you so much Lianne. People may not truly know all of us, but sometimes there’s this connection to other beings that makes it all worthwhile. :-) xo

yes, I think most artists can relate to this, especially. I have been an odd shape my whole life, I think it is this fact that has made me an artist. i used to hate my circle to everyone’s square, but I embrace it, knowing it’s what sets me (and all like us) apart.
    who wants same?
    beautiful, you.

  • Thank you Kristin. I’ve always felt like that. But now that I’ve accepted me the way I am it makes all the difference and the funny thing is, there are so many other shapes around and it makes life so much brighter and more colourful. :-) xo

Well said! Well written! I actually think that it’s every artists’ responsibility to explore their dark side. A lot of my best work comes from there. Inspiring piece of writing!

  • Thank you Kathi. I agree, my best work is when I explore my dark side. :-) xo

I feel we have been thinking so very similar …. " this ": is speaking in a different way but I thought it has a theme that compliments…

I get tired of trying too hard to be what will never be and seeing some people around me that will not accept me unless I change for them ….. I guess they don’t really see me…
This is what I would like them to read it explains it succinctly in a poignant delivery from your pen… xxx

  • Thank you KarenSue, just read it, and felt myself nodding all the way through.Definitely. No white noise here and thin is sooo out. LOL xo

we are all many things at different times and people will react according to what they are at different times…..that is our dynamics as humans……what makes the interraction a joyous experience is the acceptance of self and friends who accept the many facets we can be. You are who you are and what I have seen to date you are very special. Good cheers to you Sybille….a wonderful write. xoxo

  • Thank you Cos, I couldn’t agree more. The acceptance of who we are is what allows us to grow and become all that we can be. The best thing I ever did was sign up to RB – all the acceptance and positive feedback has allowed me to grow and become more. :-) xo
