Rain on My Skin

I remember
that one moment
when everything changed.

His sparkling laugh
as it caught my attention
the smile in his blue eyes
that sense of him
like an electric shock,
making me feel
all warm inside,
a soft glow
spreading out
from my head to my toes.

He didn’t see me
or notice me
or think of me that way,
I was just a little girl,
one of his sister’s mates,
a laughing stock
for a time
because everyone knew,
which didn’t matter a bit
because it meant so so much.

Then, one evening
all dark and glum in the rain,
with the sun shining
brightly inside me,
rainbows swirling
around my head,
he held my hand
for hours and hours
and at last kissed
me very gently good night.

It never happened again,
we went our separate ways
a long time ago.

And, yet,
I can still feel
his hand in mine,
I can still sense
the rain on my skin,
I can still taste
the sweet kiss on my lips,
no matter that
the little girl is gone
and life has kept us apart.

Artist's Description

This is a true story. I fell in love for the first time when I was nine and the kiss happened when I was fifteen. I’ve never forgotten this.

Maybe it was so perfect and always a fond memory because it was never more than just the one kiss in the rain?
