Helpless

With my hands tied behind my back
I watch you slipping
     down
        down
           down

into the abyss.

With my tongue tied
I watch you sliding
     deeper
        deeper
           deeper

into the dark.

With my eyes shut wide
I watch you slithering
     further
        further
           further

into the quicksand.

With my teeth clamped down
I watch you floating
     more
        more
           more

into the mist.

With my soul in a death grip
     I know
     I cannot reach you
     I know
I cannot do this for you
     I know
     I am the wrong person
to hold out a hand.

Some things you need
     to learn
     to understand
     to do

for yourself.

Artist's Description

Poem about the fact that sometimes you just need to watch someone struggle without being able to help. There are some lessons in life that you need to learn, hard as it is to do and even harder to watch.
