This is the illustration to the poem of the same name. Both were inspired by a Charles de Lint novel of the same name. In the novel ‘Svaha’ = (SVA-ha) means the time between when you see the lightning and when you hear the thunder – (Native American, tribe unknown).

The instant between
thunder and lightning

The moment between
dream and waking

The second between
realisation and the act

When the universe takes a deep breath
When the world is full of promise
When the cosmos is a sea of possibility

A note that continues forever
A song that is in your heart
A melody that takes you from one wheel to the next

A goddess
A mantra
An idea

Hold that instant
Make it yours
Breathe it in

Be still…
              to the silence.

Although a little research showed that this may be a myth and that the name is actually of Indian origin and is used as a mantra or the name of a goddess or both…

However, to accomodate both ideas (although I prefer the first one) I added both to the poem.

The novel is pretty good, and I just love the idea of that moment when you see the lighting and wait for the roar of the thunder. A pretty special moment as far as I am concerned…. :-)

I am a very creative person and it’s my way of dealing with the world, inside and out. I am only happy when I am making things or painting or writing. There are just not enough hours in the day…. I am into poetry and photo manipulation at the moment and also dabbling in photography. :-)

Beautiful poem and image – not read the book – shall have to look out for it.

  • Thank you so much. :-) The book is a lovely story and one of my ‘old friends’ (meaning it gets read every once in a while like meeting an old friend, familiar but still special). xo

It is a wonderful idea..this elapsing time..the void , the silence, and the flooding emotion of the energy that it is displaying.
Your image is really out of this world, and it seems that she is the void, the lighting and the thunder at the same time, as our own soul is working her way through experiences.
I love the colours, the textures, you master them so wonderfully.
Precious work of art and poetry.

  • Thank you so much Rosa. :-) I am so glad you like it. xo
