Annie. Hawaiian Night at the Old Folks Home.

madworld

Annie. Hawaiian Night at the Old Folks Home.

Annie was 93. She dressed up for the evening in the brightest clothes and hat you could imagine. She carefully put on her powder, her rouge, her lipstick and had smiled and chatted to all and sundry. However there was a secret behind that smile, a secret she told me when I went back to visit her a week later with her photo. She had lost her sole daughter a few days before these pictures were taken. A fact that hadnt been lost on me, her mouth smiled but her eyes could not hide her sorrow. After looking at the photos of her, I feel guilty, I did not keep the contact up with her. It is now too late.

This photo was shot as a series, a series of which I may continue to add on here.

This poor lady, her eyes are so sad. She looks like she’s been crying a lot.

This is a really beautiful and sad portrait – I am glad you were able to honor her in this way, and glad you were able to tell her story. Please don’t feel guilty – so many people come into our lives briefly, and perhaps you were able to give her a needed moment of comfort.

I wanted to bring Annie back, because this series rivals your B/W portraits for genius. But here, we have the added dimension of a compassion that imbues the work, not with the force of a firehose, but with gentleness, a kind of acceptance that is hard for me to describe.

  • madworld replied

Thanks again Kevin, you know how much these shots meant to me so I really really appreciate you commenting on this one. Annie was very vulnerable… a very gentle soul. Thank you so much

This image is so full of emotion…
...and you captured it so well.
It drew me to it as soon as I saw it in the challenge for the portrait of a woman and I voted for it. I had to.
The emotion i feel from this portrait is almost unbearable…it’s amazing.
    Very very well done.
    Beautiful, beautiful lady she was.

  • madworld replied

Thanks so much Leigh, Im so pleased people appreciate these shots of the elderly a much forgotten in some respects part of our society. We all need to take a bit of time and think about our future, its not too many years we have here on earth…I only hope I can have the dignity and beauty that Annie does if I ever reach her age.
