His Eye is On...

I’ve heard it said
“His eye is on
the sparrow”
and so it is sung,
as by an angel,
and I ask:

is not His eye also on
the spider and the serpent,
the bat and the rat,
all the rodents we detest
and the insects
which we label “pests”
and the plants we call “weeds”
all of which,
we humans decide,
deserve to die
by the hands of our herbicide
or the pouring of pesticide
to drown in a chemical sea
of indiscriminate killing
(we assume God willing)…?

and we forget
that just as the spider
needs its web,
we ourselves get
entangled, snared
by our desire to divorce
from the web of life
and we reap the strife
and suffering
which we bestow
upon our bio-foes
whenever we sow
our synthetic seeds of death
and these deeds, too, are spied upon
by the One who keeps His eye on…
all life

His Eye is On...

Artist's Description
