Artist's Description

the snow had started to melt and then froze over so it was easy to etch this design with a twig I found nearby.

I found myself captivated by the symbolism of the juxtaposition of winter’s cold, dark, still yin and spring’s vibrant green, active yang—and the fact that the shades are inverted from those of the ancient chinese symbol in which white symbolizes yang made for an interesting contrast to highlight how easily the extremes of yin and yang pass into their opposites in the endless balance and play of changes in the cosmos.

I also must add that my inspiration for this shot comes from Andy Goldsworthy’s work with photographing his brilliant manipulated nature sculptures
