Wonder Wheel, Coney Island
This was taken in Coney Island amusement park. The Wonder Wheel is a famous ride there. All this will soon be torn down to “build up a parking lot”, or build condominiums.

It’s always the way. Take away the fun and put in some more bland.
Great photo though. I was looking at a photo just the other day in an exhibition that was of the ‘Wonder Wheel”. I was wondering where it was… now my curiosity is satisfied. :-)

The Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone may be the only rides left standing in Coney Island. The rumors keep changing.

Great shot Madeline. What a shame that that places like this are so rapidly becoming memories.
Madeline Ellis replied
Memories! At least no one can steal that from us.

Another great shot of Coney Island from you!

Wonderful black and white photo! It’s nice to see home. I spent a lot of time twirling and spinning on this Wonder Wheel! Tearing it down? I haven’t heard about that. That’s a tragedy. I thought all the developers sunk their teeth in, had their fill and were leaving it alone for at least the next decade or so. How awful. I left New York about 5 years ago, and WOW do I miss it. So thanks for the sweet memories, and blow a kiss for me!

Thanks for taking a look and commenting. Where do you live now?

I recently heard that they are going to tear down Astroland, but leave the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel up for historical reasons.
Kim Calvert
Great shot Madeline, sad story to hear they are (or have?) tore it down..I like the composition you got on this..and perfect for the feel of the old days with the b/w.
Madeline Ellis replied
Kim, they haven’t torn this down yet. In fact, this and the cyclone may remain after the rest of the amusement park is torn down.
