Portrait of the portuguese Queen Saint Isabel .
The legend of the miracle of the roses.
Born in 1271, Queen Isabel was married to King Dinis. She was queen consort of Portugal, a tertiary of the Franciscan Order and is venerated as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Saint Elizabeth of Portugal dedicated her life to the poor. She established orphanages and provided shelter for the homeless. – It is said that some time ago, the queen, determined to help the poor, had filled her lap with bread, to distribute. The king found out and asked her where she went and she had in her lap, the queen replied simply: “They are roses, my Lord!” By opening lap, had sprung roses, instead of bread that concealed. This event became known as the miracle of the roses.
- She was canonized in 1625 by Urban VIII, and her feast day is July 8. Many Portuguese and Portuguese-American organizations bear her name.
