Family: Salticidae (jumping spiders) Approx 5mm Legspan

Commonly called Jumping spiders, the Salticidae are also affectionately referred to as Charlies, Herbies or Salties. They are very common around the home and their anthropomorphic nature endears them to most people. The family name is derived from the Latin “salto” which means to dance with pantomimic gestures This is the largest spider family and includes more than 5000 species worldwide. There are 46 genera in South Africa. These spiders are harmless to man although there have been complaints where this comical, engaging animal has been accused of nasty bites.

I photographed this tiny specimen in my garden, Cape Town, South Africa

DSLR with 105mm, f2.8 macro lens

My interest in the field of photography began in childhood, starting with film, then a ‘splatter’ of videography and finally the migration to DSLR photography.

I hope you enjoy viewing my interpretation of the Natural World through my lens.

Oh, she’s gorgeous Macky! I had one, her name was Portia, which I kept in a little fish tank for a while – watching her catch the insects I threw in was absolutely wonderful! Beautiful capture, great detail.

  • Thank you Maree, was Portia so tiny too, about 5mm legspan?

Portia was VERY tiny Macky, as you say, 5mm or smaller, couldn’t touch her, got her into the glass tank by holding it in front of her and making her jump! I kept her for about two weeks, observing, and then let her go again in a safe area on my patio. But these jumping spiders just LOVE to be indoors, and I normally just leave them be.
