My miniature origami calendar

I used tweezers only for the last few folds. The paper was about 15×15mm big. This is my first attempt at something this small.

Here I present the creator and the creation where the crane is framed by my fingers forming a circle. We can only understand size, fragility and significance when we compare two things. When we think, for example, how big the world is, we’re like tiny little specks of sand, or even atoms, to the eyes of a God holding the earth in his palm.

For a better idea of scale

I began folding origami since the age of ten. I was inspired by the story of “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes”, from which I learned the the paper crane symbolized peace and good fortune. It wasn’t, however, until April 2008 (when I made this piece) that I began practicing folding miniature origami. In my mind I wasn’t actually setting out to do a miniature origami when I started folding this. I was bored and took a random strip of paper, cut a square out of it, and started folding a crane. I was daydreaming so I wasn’t paying attention to how small the paper was. After completing the crane I realized it was rather tiny. This piece is the first among my miniature origami pieces, but meanwhile it is one of my biggest. After I folded this, only then have I begun to practice folding miniature origami. I do however still continue folding larger pieces; sometimes I do a miniature origami concept folding at a slightly bigger size rather than the smallest size possible, just because it does the photo more justice.

This crane wasn’t difficult to fold. Photographing it was another story (as I was not really a photographer then). Can learn more here
