Artist's Description

Seagulls in the summer fly above the sea.
Treegulls in the autumn fly above the trees.
The dark clouds fill the once sunny sky
As the air gets cold and the leaves turn dry.
As the leaves fall down and cover the ground,
The gulls circle in the sky like a merry-go-round.

.
Mixed media collage. The seagulls were first drawn in pencil, then painted in watercolour, then I cut them out. The background is a piece of newsprint paper that I crumpled for some texture, which I then painted in a mix of autumn colours. I placed the gulls on the scanner and held the background about 15mm above the scanner with some light shining through so that the shadow of the gulls would cast on the background, like trees below, while it blurs as the ‘moving’ gulls are in focus.
Here in Toronto, Canada it is Autumn. When it is sunny the leaves look beautiful; but often the sunshine is coming and going so moments of capturing the beauty of Autumn are often very short – and moments seeing birds in the most beautiful conditions are even shorter. This was my inspiration behind this piece. One day I saw many flocks of birds circling around in the sky like; sometimes like a merry-go round. Usually they were pigeons, but at one moment I caught a seagull above an autumn tree. As I looked back at this photo ‘treegulls’ came to mind; however, since the photo was not very good, I create an artwork instead – a nice change since lately I’ve mostly been posting photography. At this time of year it is common to see birds flying together since they are migrating.
It has also been YEARS since I painted – so the first time in over 5 years I took out my paints. As I took out my paints, it brought back some nostalgic memories – as well as some funny ones. You can read all about it here.
Available on cards, prints, clothing, stickers, cases and more.
