And within a field of trees I found,
A city of brick dug into the ground.

Another sketch for my sketchbook assignment from the period of my Italy exchange – this one is from our Northern Italy trip; drawn with a STAEDLER pigment liner on an A4 paper in my sketchbook . I’m not going to upload every single one (I have 91 in total), but I hope you all enjoy those I share :-). For those who missed the first two:

As mentioned previously, the assignment was to do a sketch from the urban environment everyday – and speaking of “urban”, this sketch was done in a city called Urbino!

It was quite a unique city, one I felt carried it’s own unique identity. For one it was enclosed in walls and you go through a gate to enter the city.

Being in this city sort felt like being inside a big courtyard

And meanwhile all the surfaces – the floors, the walls, the ledges, are all made of the same material; as though rather than being built onto, they were carved of one block. I enjoyed going around the city, going on my own little adventures site-seeing on my own; going up and down the stairs along the walls, walking along the border, as well dipping into the city center; which was indeed lower in topography; I carried my sketchbook around with me, sometimes jotting notes of what I saw and felt. (The notes say “above more private”, “below more entertainment – more energy”.)

See a few shots inside the city here

It is an earth coloured city surrounded by greenery, and around the walls are the more private part of town

Our hotel was outside of walls – meaning to go back, meant always going up a long ramp……. I did a hell lot of walking during this trip so I didn’t gain weight despite all the Italian food (though the term end final probably made me gain it back :P)

I began my sketchbook assignment around the beginning of September 2008- at the time not having really drawn for a long time, I struggled a bit; especially since I was often short on time and I was more used to using a pencil. The fact that I started with a fine liner as a ball point was more challenging – I started using ball point during the Southern Italy field, the first being in yesterday’s upload though overtime I switched back and forth between different kinds of pens. I did find myself getting faster at drawing overtime – consequently sometimes that meant putting in less details. One reason I struggled with time initially was because one of the things I enjoy the most when I draw is shading (that’s why I love the pencil…). With the challenge of the limited time though, that forces me to concentrate on getting the most important elements in my drawings.

Oh and if anyone can identify the building for me, please let me know!
