Longing to be back to the land by the sea,
Where the air smelled nostalgically sweet in the cool summer breeze.
I felt lucky to go abroad, working close to the shore
While some of the staff had never left their country before.
(excerpt from my poem Memoirs of an Intern )
Taken May 20, 2007 with a Fuji E-510
This image is the cover for my Miura Coast calendar.
This rock in, known as Shiroyama (literally means “white mountain”), is located Arasaki Park (Yokosuka, Japan). Yokosuka is a city in Miura near Hayama, the town where I did my internship. Hayama is renowned for the beach and green hills, and this place was just a drive down.
Hayama literally means “leaf mountain” in Japanese, and indeed Hayama is full of green mountains. The coast of Yokosuka, as well as Hayama; along with other cities in Miura are popular for their beaches and offer a rich experience with nature. Areas like these are very different from Tokyo (which is a lot of people’s idea of Japan).
I loved it here; in this park, nature itself is a work of art. And by the sea, the air smelled nostalgically sweet…

Love the shape of the trees and the texture of the rock …. nice image Mui-Ling :))
Love the texture of the rocks and shape of the trees as richie said….beautiful!
Amazing natural structure…so very well captured..love the smooth textures. Great work Mui-Ling!
This landscape is so like the Japanese paintings, and I thought they had a special way of painting the nature, now I see that the nature is special. I think this looks even better framed.
You’re right iCandor. I was very fascinated by the sculptural form of this rock. When I went back to school, I showed photos to classmates and they were fascinated by Hayama’s scenery.

amazing
What a treasure, to see this, like Bonsai Trees, Excellently Composed, I see where so much Japanese Carvings are inspired by true Land scapes, and how much this lends to a creative Spirit.
It truly is a beautiful place. Thanks!
