Artist's Description

We were all once stardust; we came from the sky.
Some of us stayed on the ground; others learned to fly.

As of 2014 I have some framed versions of this piece available for sale. Learn more here

I made this piece months ago, and I composed this diptych recently. As mentioned in Wish I’ve had a string of misfortune this year. One of the misfortunes was losing a collection of my origami, which fell out of my knapsack during one very hectic day at school; and later in the evening the custodians mistook it for garbage and threw it away. It was not too long after that incident that I made Freedom; a piece big enough to appreciate in real life, but still have the quality of the miniature folding in it – and the first of its kind.

The paper is a scarp piece of velum from my days as an architecture student. I cut squares from the paper (each measuring ¼” x ¼”), only leaving a corner uncut so that the crane would still be attached to the paper once I fold out of it – there was no gluing. Therefore, the square at the size that it is cut is what makes up those cranes; no piece of paper was completely taken away. Determining how to photograph the piece was a challenge; and in the end I resorted to doing a diptych. My hand is included as a scale reference, but also to cast a shadow looking like a hand reaching for the flying cranes as they lift off the paper to freedom…

I wasn’t really thinking about it during the time I made this, but this perhaps is a bit similar to the works of Peter Callesen or Masahiro Chatani’s origamic architecture.

Both images were taken with an Olympus FE-340
