We were all once stardust; we came from the sky.
Some of us stayed on the ground; others learned to fly.

The piece itself I made months ago and I composed this diptych recently. So this is the second piece I share this year after ‘Wish’. As mentioned in Wish I’ve had a string of misfortune this year and I’m wishing for it to end. One of the misfortunes was losing a collection of my origami which fell out of my knapsack one very hectic day at school, and later in the evening the custodians mistook it for garbage and threw it away. It was not too long after that incident that I made Freedom; a piece big enough to appreciate in real life, but still have the quality of the miniature folding in it – and the first of it’s kind.

The paper is a piece of velum scrap from my days as an architecture student. I cut squares from the paper (each measuring ¼” x ¼”), only leaving a corner uncut so that the crane would still be attached to the paper once I fold out of it – there was no gluing. So the square at the size that it is cut is what makes up those cranes; no piece of paper was completely taken away. The difficult part was how to photograph it; and in the end I resorted to doing a diptych. My hand is in there for a scale reference, but it’s really the hand’s shadow that appears to be trying to reach up to the flying cranes as they lift off the paper to freedom…

I wasn’t really thinking about it during the time I made this, but this perhaps is a bit similar to the works of Peter Callesen or Masahiro Chatani’s origamic architecture.
