This is the Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, and the innocent looking mountain in the background is Mount Vesuvius. But this isn’t just some pretty scenery.

Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano that erupted in AD 79; destroying the city and the people; hence this is a shot of the destructor and it’s aftermath. Currently it isn’t erupting, and Pompeii is now a hot tourist attraction. It is amazing how much a place can change…

Hey Mui-Ling, yeah, we learned about it a little in our history books when i was in primary school and there were very old pictures and descriptions, i found it most fascinating…i mean, i don’t know much at all… but it was scary how the people were just caught out like they were…and the whole place and everyone in it perished… i also saw a dr who episode a while ago that related to it all … they’d gone back in time..very interesting stuff :) x

  • Yeah it is scary. I think I saw some of the bodies behind glass while I was there, as well as a horse’s skeleton. I’ve got more pics in facebook :o)

i think that the preservation of the bodies in their exact poses…. while going about their everyday chores, was perhaps the most fascinating thing of all… i don’t know if i could have stomached seeing the bodies …wow… what an experience that must have been for you

  • It is rather amazing; if not for the fact that I keep recalling something unpleasant that happened that day (can see my first reply to the first comment) I would have enjoyed it much much more b/c it is really incredible. But the unpleasant memory is one of my worst unfortunately.
