Got my calendar! And I'm hiding no more.
I purchased my Tiny Treasures calendar during the calendar sale and finally got it in the mail today! But I delayed in posting…
The photos below are linked from the images which I just uploaded onto Facebook. I spent much of the day debating on whether to post there or not. In the past I always avoided putting anything about RedBubble on my facebook because RB was a special place for me to interact with a different group of people; different from people who I see too often. It was also where I’d go when I felt like getting away with what was around me; namely school stress, so really I aimed not to let my university school mates know about Redbubble; I feared that if I brought it out to the open, there may possibly be a good many who would join and it would not be my retreat anymore (especially considering that in architecture school there are a lot of people who can draw well or take good photos); I wouldn’t have minded telling a few, but I wouldn’t know who to choose to tell; and it wouldn’t be fair to the rest… and gossip can easily go around in my class since it is so small and we have all the same classes together and see each other all the time during school… that was what MY school environment was like! But I figured I’d probably tell them eventually.
Now is that time. I’ve started having the urge to start opening up more and sharing about my RB life. I can’t hide it forever anyways; the first thing that comes up when I google my name is my RedBubble profile; the chances of that happening owed to the fact that I have an uncommon name. That is not to say I’m trying to promote myself; I’m just simply not going to hide it anymore. Some people form groups on Facebook for their works and invite their friends directing attention to their work. For now I’m only going to post in my own profile. I figured that since not everyone pays attention or takes time to look through my artwork album anyways; I’m not totally unveiling my secret. And for those who do take enough interest to browse and find out, they are more likely the ones who I’d wish to share my work with anyways :)
Well, I’ll see how that goes… Anyhoo, here are my calendar pics!
My initial reaction when I opened the package was that it looked dark… until I brought it to a brighter spot :P
Still a bit darker than the original but looks great! And they look bigger than what I’m used too :P
AND IT LOOKS BETTER IN REAL LIFE THAN IN THESE PHOTOS!!!! I just have a hard time taking pictures OF PICTURES with glossy surfaces – I have to compromise between low light or glare!
A weird fisheye effect also happened – of course it’s not like that in real life.

and a close-up of the back previews (with my origami sitting on them)

I decided to keep a record of every page in case I may decide in the future to cut out the pictures and frame them….

I think RB prints are a bit darker in general…these look great Mui-Ling…
Mui-Ling Teh replied
True. I also have two cards from RB; both of which the art is included in this calendar. But the first time I saw them my first reaction was not about their darkness; I was just looking in a dark spot when I came in through the door :o)
But yes, the RB prints are generall darker.

Nice to hear it :)
>RB prints are a bit darker in general
Many people are used to LCD monitors which are usually set up too bright. The real prints may look a bit dark then…
Mui-Ling Teh replied
I guess; thank you Lenka.

I’m surprised you haven’t made one; but then again, you mostly upload your designs for t-shirts. But you’re stuff would probably look great in a calendar; I bet it would sell well too!

How did I miss this!!!! O it’s just fantastic…. You are doing the most unique wirk with your origami, but you are also a talented illustrator and photographer, not many artists can claim all three…. I love your calendar … And I’m so glad you’re here on RB!! This is an excellent journal!! :)) ‘Tiny Treasures’ ROCK!!!
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Awww, thank you so much Karin :) and nice new avatar!
Although it is very common for to find people gifted in both streams of illustration and photography. Some people here made two accounts for that purpose (though I personally don’t think I’ll be able to manage two) and some just prefer to pursue one discipline more than the other.
I was surprised at first when I saw my journal in the RB journal. I was thinking to myself “When did I write a 2010 Calendar review?” as this journal really concentrates on my own calendar. The way RB titled it sounds much more professional too :P

Ray Clemmer
about prints being dark from rb…..most of us use an LCD monitor which is usually BRIGHTER in nature than the CRT monitors use to be…if i order a print from my laptop (lcd) i have to be careful to check color balance and density on my old crt first.!! – - calabration is a tricky subject between monitor-printer….
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Yes, I’ve realised. I’m still happy with the results though.
Aurora Pintore
very beautiful and original, i like it!!!!!!!!!!!

Quality of pictures Tiny Treasures calendar is very bad. You need really but really good camera, good light and you can make good pictures with subjects she selected. Ray Clemmer is right and I just use CRT. I like to make positive comments, and I am really sorry but its better to be honest and say true. Nedim

Maybe you are mistaking the quality of the photos in the calendar with the quality of the photos OF THE CALENDAR.
Have a look at this:
I admit I’ve had trouble taking pictures of pictures and the photos of the calendar isn’t great, but the calendar itself looks fine. This card above is of the same image as in December; which more or less is the same quality as how it appears in the calendar. But I had troble photographing it b/c of glare on shiny surface and photographing a 2D image is not the same as a tiny 3D set-up so I used a scanner to present it’s quality. I cannot prove the quality of the calendar with my scanner b/c it doesn’t fit, but it is more or less the same quality of the card as shown in scan.

Mui-Ling please dont take this personal. Maybe you made good photos I cant say but photos I saw on calendar look bad. Some professionals I know use term “burned” if same surface have no contrast, adequate light, structure, sharpness. Image for January, September and July is typical example but some other photos too …
However I appreciate your effort and I also have to say that you decided to make something very difficulty for implementation. Just easy, many other new works waiting for you …..
After few years you will watch on your works with totally another view. Try to forget emotions and watch your work like somebody else made that :) Its not easy …. even to me. :)))
Mui-Ling Teh replied 21 days ago
True, it isn’t easy and I do need a better camera; a macro lens would be conveniant for the smaller items. But alas I need to save money for school, and can only afford doing art that uses up less materials :-P
Mui-Ling Teh replied 21 days ago
P.S. I wasn’t taking anything personally. I only wanted to make sure you weren’t mixing up the quality of the photos in this journal to the photos of the origami alone. Yes I know the photos themselves can be better, but they just look worse here. I was rather frustrated myself that I couldn’t make photos of photos appear as well as the raw photo itself, but I was excited nonetheless when the calendar arrived that I felt like sharing with my friends who were watching me.
