Fly away in a week!

My flight to Rome is due Aug 24th, a week + a day from now! I’ve been really busy with the packing and preparation lately; and have been slow on comments; I still come on RB everyday though and look at a few works, and for those new works I haven’t left a comment on, it isn’t because I’m trying to be ignorant! I’ve been running around, but I’m never totally away from the bubble; though I’m less active now than I used to be.

My packing is almost done but I’ll probably be going back to see what I can take out of my luggage to ensure I don’t go beyond the weight limit :P. I’ve always managed to be below the weight limit; but this time I’m going away for 8 months; accommodating for both the hot season and the cold season (Rome is very hot in September; and London can be very cold in winter); plus I have to carry some school stuff with me this time, and I can anticipate that I’ll be buying more things in Rome; and maybe London too. To Europe and back I can have two luggages checked in, each weighing up to 50lbs. plus one carry-on – this I am used to. However, while flights within Europe are cheap, the luggage limit is more strict; Ryan airlines allows one check in up to 15 kg (33lbs.) and one carry-on so I have to try to not bring too much now anyhow (If anyone knows some better deals I’d love to hear! A train ride option would be nice too if any :) ).

Aside from packing I’ve just reformatted my laptop. During my previous school semester my laptop kept running into many problems and I had such a difficult semester partly because of that. Strangely though, after the semester was over and I began my internship, I stopped running into those errors – as though my laptop had a personality of its own and just decided to go on strike during the school semester (Hmmm, maybe it’s time I give it a name :p). During school I always have to do so much work on the computer; doing heavy graphics from time to time, and keeping the computer on over night – I make it work hard; it must really hate school :P So the past 7 months I didn’t run into problems but decided to reformat to be on the safe side; let my laptop forget all the torments from school in the same old town and let it enjoy brand new memories in Rome ~ so long as it doesn’t get stolen :P (has happened to some students who went to Rome in previous years). If that happens I can’t share my Rome photos with you lovely people here so let’s all hope everything goes smoothly!

Ciao!

I’m sure we will all be waiting to hear about your exciting new adventures Mui-ling, i know i certainly will be. Hopefully your naughty little laptop plays nicely so you can share all!

    Keep those smiles smiling :-)

    Thanks Adz :-)

I hope my laptop will play nicely this time too; though I can’t really blame him/her for being rebellious; hadn’t reformatted him/her in 2 years :P; and if my body feels pain from pulling two alnighters in a row – well I’ve never left my computer on for more than a day; but I often had to run so many programs at once on it that puts a lot of weight on it’s shoulders. They say machines can’t feel pain, but who knows :P.

Thank you Lisa! I’m going to be attending school in Rome; and I’m hoping that school stress won’t get too much in the way of enjoying Rome. Luckily I’ll be staying there in December and going to London from there directly. I know I’ll be able to enjoy London because I’m more free during an internship; though I’m guessing there is more to see in Italy so I hope to stay there as long as I can before I begin work.

Hello Mui-Ling Teh You could Courier some things that you don’t want to send on the plane and Vice Versa while you are there and you find that you would like to take some things back you could always courier those to your home. ;O)
I am looking forward to seeing your new Posts as you journey as well I am eager to hear of your achievements and look forward to encouraging you in what ever way I can, I am sure that I am not the only one here at the Redbubble who is in with me on these notes, I am eager for you and I hope that you don’t get too crazy and that you remain calm enough to be organized while being off the wall excited just the same.

Lol, don’t worry I’m not a partying or drinking type. I like to travel though; that’ll be something I have to control – being over there I’m sure anyone would feel they have to see as much as they can while they are there, but that can really affect marks. We do have field trips and I’ve decided that I’ll make use of those times for the sightseeing, and spend the rest for school unless I’m really free or if I have to travel for the sake of an assignemnt ;) I’ll be spending the Christmas break there too so I can fully enjoy that time.

I am thinking about using a courier or buying things while I’m in Italy – apparently some things are cheap there (or so I’ve heard); though I may have to courier back anyhow – the best is if I am able to pack really light.

Thankd very much for your words of encouragement Jason, it means a lot to me. Though this is a very exciting opportunity I must admit I feel a bit tense; school is always a lot of work and I don’t speak Italian. Now we attend classes in English but for our own shopping and such I may need to use some Italian; though I’ve heard from some past students that it’s possible to get away with using English. But regardless I do feel lucky; so long as nothing tragic happens. One thing you can count on though is that I won’t be partying ;) I’m actually too extreme in the other way.

Thank you Thelma; I love this community. While this is a great opportunity, I do feel sad that I’ll be spending less time on the Bubble, and I’m grateful for those who understand and continue to support me here.

Get ahold of your next internship advisor or supervisor and see if you can mail stuff ahead. That saves on the luggage charges, anyway. And remember the root word of “luggage” is “lug”- you won’t have as much to ‘lug’ through the airport, etc. Smart to reformat your computer. They like to be reformatted once or twice a year- like going to the psychiatrist and getting all the old junk out of one’s psyche.
“Buena suerte” as we say in Spanish—don’t know Italian for it. You only know one way to study and work—giving it your all. So get a lock-down strap for your computer and develop eyes in the back of your head. Hugs, -=Dayonda

They say the courier service to Italy is really slow; and school’s advice was to pack as light as possible and buy things while we’re there. Sometimes I do feel the school needs to provide more support, info and services… but I’m getting there so no point complaining about it now. I bought a plug adapter today since Italy and London both use a different kind of plug than Canada. Luckily I did my research but I don’t know if every other student is aware of this difference; they may end up bringing their laptops and having no where to plug it! The school hasn’t given any heads up; maybe they assume everyone would already know?

Spanish and Italian tend to be pretty close; maybe there is a similar saying in Italian for “Buena suerte”. Thank you for your words of wisdom Dayonda. I was still suffering myself from some awful memories from school but your words are giving me a new hope; I’ll come back to them when I’m down :)

LOL well I am not a party dude myself on that note. I think is safe to say that your priorities are bang on and you have a solid understanding of who you are and I am sure you will be fine all along the way.

Have a great time Mui-Ling take lots of photos and post when you can – Places in London you should try and see is the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square (great people watching) There is a great gallery (National ?) right by Trafalgar Square. Both cities are known for their architecture – so I am sure you will love it.- Have a great time

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Wow thank you so much Michelle! I just had a few places in mind, but haven’t planned the entire 4 months yet. I’ll look into those places :)

The best of everything to you, Mui-Ling. i hope you enjoy your time in Europe. Bring us some pictures. A gazillion hugs!!

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thanks Lori, and sure I’ll bring you some pictures – If we can keep our fingers crossed that my laptop won’t get stolen; a good excuse to ask lady luck to chase thieves and thugs away from my pc isn’t it ;)

  • Lori Peters

    Lori Peters

I’ve had my purse stolen so I am for anything that chases thieves away.

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

If I were with you when that happened and saw it; I’d chase after that thug and pounce on him/her (and kick him/her :P) – unless it was a child.

I’ve been trying to brainstorm ways to prepare for these kind of situations as they are more common in Europe than they are here. I once had this silly idea that I’d always carry an apple with me, that I could throw at the thugs if I needed to, in order to make them fall down, hence allowing me to catch up to them, without killing them ;)
