My origami calendar

Just one sheet makes a big difference;
One sheet that can make over 2000 cranes.
Each crane a step closer to a better world;
Each piece a step closer to peace.

Each square in the grid paper is 5×5mm; and to be exact, there were 2028 full squares in the paper

When I was in grade 5 our teacher read “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” to our class. Sadako Sasaki was infected with leukemia. She spent her days folding cranes and making wishes upon them; wishing for her health and for a more peaceful world (the quote above is my writing inspired by the story of the thousand paper cranes).

This concept was originally created in 2008, and photographed without a tripod. But now I have a tripod and decided to re-shoot this again and re-uploaded it on September 6, 2009. Taken with ans Olympus FE-340 on super macro mode.

This piece has been included among RB’s featured pages, and in the following groups:

So amazing, wow, remarkable. Such patience you have to make such beautiful art, fantastic

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thank you Lisa. This was very difficult to take, and I’ve been at it since yesterday. Finally resorted to shooting elsewhere and doing a bunch of weird tactics like using erasers to balance my camera on an angle (I don’t have a tripod). Now I have to clean up my mess :P

I will have a little spot on my front page when you give the word of all your work and how you are doing it.. I really mean it.. I am fascinated and think your work is important to seeing how wonderful and paitent we can be as humans.. Bravo !

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thank you Lina! It was while folding some of these that I was trying to do the video (had many chances as you can see ;) ). Thanks for the offer of the spot on your front page; though what do you mean by “when you give the word of all your work and how you are doing it” ?

Thank you to each one of you! Though I hope nobody gets the wrong idea that I have actually used an entire sheet of paper to fold over 2000 cranes :P. That day may come later; maybe… I don’t if I made 1000 cranes yet; haven’t kept count :P.

I just love the origami, the image and the title…
I was so excited when i saw this in my activities monitor Mui-ling….
the idea of folding paper cranes for peace
    is such a lovely one….

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thank you so much Karin! Certainly people who love the story of Sadako would enjoy this more.

  • linaji

Well how would it look in stages.. like how many photo’s do you think it would look like from start to finish.. step one…two ..so on.. in the tag line you put one word like crane and it will group everthing together.. then the photo on top will be one of your finished pieces.. so you have a group of photos about your work..any quesitons? BM me..xox

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Ah Lina, I just re-read this more carefully. I should have told you earlier, I already have a shortcut on my profile for my origami works. It includes my big origami too but it’s only 2 pgs right now and they are mostly miniatures.

Just a small spot so it isn’t bad; though it looks ugly.

This reminds me of a little girl in Hiroshima who got cancer from the bomb and was convinced that if she made enough cranes, she would get better. She made hundreds, thousands, the more she made, the smaller they became and some of those are still at display in the Hiroshima museum.

Unfortunately she did not get better and died. But she did become a symbol of Hiroshima and her making of cranes is continued by school kids throughout Japan and so you will find her statue in Hiroshima surrounded by thousands and thousands of cranes.

I have great respect for your origami skills.

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

That little girl was Sadako Sasaki, I love her story.

Might be fun for my pullip doll to hold! Do you sell these? I bet there’s a big market in the miniature community!

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thank you very much blackjack :D You think these are sellable? I was looking out for exhibition opportunities prior to going back to school (I’m on an exchange now), but I never heard back from anyone I applied to; I guess it wasn’t the kind of work they were looking for.

  • blackjack

    blackjack

Have you tried looking into Etsy? It’s a site for the crafting community. Fun to shop on there, and even more fun to sell stuff! I am on there under bkstowell. I don’t have much listed yet, but trying it to see how it goes!

  • blackjack

    blackjack

Look up Pullip dolls and check them out if you don’t know what I’m talking about- they are 1/6 scale dolls, so if you made anything about that size, you might be able to market them towards people who collect Pullips, Blythes, or other dolls!

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Wow thanks! I’m in the havoc of exams and deadlines at school now, but I’ll check it out later!

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

I just looked at that site; I have to pay a fee for every item listed, and pay extra if that item is listed longer than 3 month, so I think I’ll pass. Especially now I don’t think I’ll have the time to market myself and hence would only be spending money instead of earning anything. Once I graduate I may pursue this more, then maybe it would be a better opportunity. Thanks for the suggestion anyways.
