Born from the Cell

See my origami calendar

Folded on June 21, 2008 and shot through a magnifying glass (as I only have a handhled camera without the fancy macro features – though I did use macro mode). Taken with an Olympus FE-220)

A crane folded from a 3×3mm piece of trace paper

The folding process can be seen here

And just for fun, I used this photo to create my new avatar (created on June 15, 2009)

Here is the paper:

For a better idea of scale:

I didn’t videotape myself folding as linaji suggested, but just for fun here’s a preview of the origami surgery :P. I probably used the needles more than the tweezers in this one!

omig!! is that how you do it Mui-Ling?
with tweezers and needles…..wow…..it so intrigues me
my mouth is gaping … it is hard to comprehend how you do origami on this scale
what does it feel like after you’ve accomplished such a feat?
it must be so fulfilling :D

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

It was real toughy this one. It still isn’t perfect yet; but by now I can see that it cannot be perfect; no matter what I have to touch the paper a lot, and the moisture will ruin the paper more and more. Even touching it by needles damage it somewhat; it is extremely fragile. Still I am proud of this; it is the smallest thing I’ve ever done along with Thumbelina’s flower, but unlike that flower which was often mistaken to be real, this one is obviously, though surprisingly, by hand. I’m glad you like it; thank you so much Karin :D

I missed this micro origami Mui-Ling and am amazed, totally gobsmacked, by your infinite care and patience. You really should be a neuro surgeon with such skill

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

lol, thanks jacqi, but I don’t think I can stand looking into a human body :P

I’ve been pretty stressed out with some matters lately and haven’t had much chance to look at new work. I’m starting school again soon and need to have some important matters taken care of before then. Hopefully it’ll be resolved sooner than I expect then I can catch up on your new works.

  • Mui-Ling Teh replied

Thank you so much! I appreciate this comment, all the faves and adding me to your watchlist! I must say the timing is a bit ironic; I leave for Rome in two days; I’ll be attending school there so I don’t think I’ll find the time to be putting up more origami until the semestre is over, though I will be posting up journals with my Rome photos and maybe some sketches if you look forward to that! :)

Thank you Paul. This has been a new hobby of mine over the past year; although now since I’m back in school; I’ve been too busy to do this. Currently I’m studying in Rome and now I upload photos and drawings I do there. I hope to do more origami once the semestre is over.
