Warm like a Firefly...
This was during my stay in Japan. On this day there was a typhoon to be expected so instead of going out, my landlady and I visited her friend Ayumi. This is her cat Hotaru; her name means “firefly” in Japanese. Even though it was chilly outside, I felt warm with little Hotaru sleeping in my lap; my little firefly…

A fantastic artwork .Excellent.
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Thanks Irene. This is actually a photograph of my artwork as opposed to a scan. Somehow it didn’t turn out well when scanned because the fur strokes got rough, and some wasn’t visible at all. Glad it came out somewhat in the photo.

So sweet! I love it in orange.
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Glad you do. It’s not as easy as pencil, but atleast it doesn’t smudge, and I did want to bring out the firefly warmth. Thanks Lori.

Wow you had given a new life to that pic with your awesome artistic skills and believe me your artworks looks much better than the original pic….impressed.
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Thank you Shree. In the past I got too hung up on drawing exactly as things were then realized the beauty of art is the ability to re-create differently and infuse new life. I’m glad you like this.

I love your drawing Mui-Ling, you must be really anticipating going to Italy and draw, draw and draw…
Mui-Ling Teh replied
Thank you Andromedae. It’s funny you mention Italy and drawing in this particular work. In Italy I’ll be doing sketches during field trips and I was thinking of using the red lead that I used in this drawing during those field trips. I used one of those architectural lead holding drafting pencils, and you know how architects use blue lead to draw construction lines? I found some dark blue lead in Japan and they were selling these red ones too; and I ended up using them for sketching than drafting :P They’re conveniant because they don’t smudge, and rather than carrying around a whole bunch of pencils of different grade, I could achieve a fairly good range of gradients with this alone; although it doesn’t blend as smoothly as graphite; but that’s what it gets for being less smudgy. I used blue lead to do some sketches during a field trip once; you can see those on the second page of my art here (or you can go to the quick link on my profile page). Not necessarily my best work, but these were quick sketches.

A golden womb…
re-brithing…
full of hopes,
full of life,
within his own dreams…
passed away fears,
for what to get to eat…

Love pouring out.. and purring inside.
