I never thought I’d ever catch a humming bird with his mouth open! There were three others around the feeder and I imagined he was laying down the law about something or other. I think it’s an Anna’s hummingbird, here on our side deck,on the southern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

What a wonderful shot, Jann! And you’re right. It’s probably laying down the law about something!

  • Hi Mike..I wouldn’t doubt that, they are real scrappers, though I’ve never seen any actual body contact. I think it’s all about who puts on the best show! I was thrilled to catch the beak open like that;)

Jann, this capture is really something to see. I’m betting he was having his say about something as well Such gorgeous clarity and detail is so wonderful to see. A fave for sure. :>)) Leslie

  • Hi was such a joy to get this shot. We have three big feeders going at once in the warmer weather, there’s so many of them around, and in the evening especially we can hear the quarreling all the! Glad you liked it and thanks so much for the fave!

You captured this one perfectly Jann!! I wonder if he was saying “Cheese”

  • Thanks Blair..good to see you again! Don’t know about “cheese”, I’d bet it was something! It was unusual, he just sat there and squawked at the others flying around, they usually square off in the air!

Nice shot. They have the longest beaks, but then they need them to get the nedctar from the flowers. Barb

  • Hi Barbara, and thanks! They have their beaks open like that when feeding on insects, but that’s usually when they’re flying and going like bullets so I’ve never had any luck getting a shot. This was the first time I’ve managed it.
