There are so many beautiful little villages along the South Shore of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, it’s impossible for me to pick one that I like more than others. This is North West Cove, a tiny fishing village on the Aspotogan Peninsula. Highway 3 (The Lighthouse Route) follows the south shore from Halifax all the way to Yarmouth at the south-west end of the province, but there are a great many side roads that lead to beautiful peaceful places like this one. The fishing boats tie up in the protected cove, safe from the Atlantic Ocean storms. Their colours and those of the houses reflect the individuality of the people who live there.
Taken with a Sony DSCF828 camera, October 2005 as the hardwood trees take on their Fall colours.

Geez, Jann. This could easily be a painting with all the vibrant colours.
    Good shot !!! :)

  • Hi Stan! Glad you liked it..the people in those villages love the bright colours, and that’s what makes the scenes so lovely. My intention was to use the photos as the basis for paintings, but I’d never live long enough to make a dent..lol!

It’s great to live in N.S. We have some wonderful scenes and you’ve caught this one beautifully.
    Ian.

  • Good morning Ian, and thank you! My partner is from Cape Breton and lived in Lower Sackville for many years. He has a son there and a grandson in Bedford and we try to come back every year. Still planning for this year, but hoping for a bit better weather..lol! I really love N.S. and I’m always happy to get back again. Cheers, Jann.

    Lovely shot Jann!

  • Thanks very much Brian. George tells me it’s much the same scenery in many little places in Newfoundland, but I haven’t managed to get there yet. But we will!!!

I used to live in North west Cove and I always enjoy going back to see the scenery and take pictures. The house I lived in is no longer there but it was situated where we could watch the waves on the rocks in Peggy’s Cove. Many painters and photographers used our yard to take pictures looking straight out the Cove. There was a movie filmed here in the fall of1955.

  • Hi, and thank you for the nice comments and information. I love Nova Scotia since I first went in 2005, and we try to get back every year. Especially liked the Peninsula and I took a lot of shots of North West Cove. I can imagine it was so beautiful to grow up there and being able to look across at Peggy’s from your house. I’m a nut for old movies, do you remember the name of that one?

I do. It was “High Tide at Noon” with Betta St. John and Michael Craig. The producer was J.R. Rankin. Fishing was really poor that preceding summer so this was a welcome economic boost in the fall.
